Living with a Pet with a Chronic Condition: Coping Strategies for Pet Owners

At Oxford Animal Hospital in The Villages, we treat both our clients and their humans like family. We understand that a pet's parents' well-being is directly linked to the care a pet receives. Conditions of this type include:

  • Diabetes
  • Arthritis
  • Cancer
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Asthma
  • Kidney disease
  • Liver disease

The Path Ahead

Living with a pet that has a chronic condition can be stressful, to say the least. At times, you may go through a full range of emotions, from sadness and guilt to anger and hopelessness. First, know that these are all normal feelings and there's no wrong or right way to feel. Seeing a pet you love so much deteriorate and unable to live its best life is distressing for any pet owner. You aren't alone. But there are things you can do to deal with those feelings and help your furry friend at the same time.

  • Educate yourself on the condition and treatments that are available. This will give you a sense of control while helping your pet find relief.
  • Ask for help. Don't be afraid to call your vet for advice. Talk to other people in the same situation. If your feelings are taking over your daily life, speak to a counselor.
  • Take a Break. Ask a trusted friend or family member to pet sit for a night or two. If that's not possible, take them to a vet-staffed boarding facility. Some time apart would be good for you both.
  • Let go of what you can't control. Remember that what's happening to your pet is not your fault. You didn't cause it nor can you control it. All you can do is love them and keep giving them the care they need.
  • Don't give up hope. New treatments and cures are discovered each day, so stay positive.
